Venerable Spiridon and Nicodemus, Prosphora-Bakers of the Near Kyivan Caves

„Виробляючи хліб приношення своїми руками, і неперестанне псалмопіння своїми устами приносячи Господеві, як жертву хвали з чесним Никодимом, блаженний Спиридоне, з ним же молися Христу Богу за спасіння душ наших.” (Тропар на Голос 8-ий)

На 13-го листопада за григоріанським календарем (цебто 31-го жовтня за юліанським) ми святкуємо пам'ять Преподобних Отців наших, Святих Спиридона й Никодима, Просфорників, що їх мощі спочивають у Ближніх Печерах.

Св. Спиридон прибув у Києво-Печерську Лавру в часі служби в ній Ігумена Пімена (1132-1141). Хоч і не був вже він молодим і ніколи не навчився читати чи писати, ця скромна Божа людина завдала собі подвиг вивчити Псалтир напам’ять. Він постійно і співав його тоді, коли рубав дрова, чи місив тісто, чи розпалював піч, чи виробляв Просфори - Хліби, що їх Богу приносять підчас відправи Божественної Літургії.

Це ж і було те особливе служіння, яке доручив Ігумен Св. Спиридону з огляду на чистоту його серця та його щиру відданість Богу. У цій праці супроводжав Св. Спиридона інший чернець, Св. Никодим, також смиренна душа, який став йому справжнім братом. Ці два монахи радісно співали Псальми виконуючи поважне завдання приготовляти той Хліб, який підчас Літургії дія Духа Святого перетворювала на Пречисте Тіло Господнє. А ввесь час залишався цей Хліб і плодом земним, і таким чином сполучував Він Небесне з земним при кожному звершенні Відправи, сповняючи те, що Господь навіки завершив Своїм Боговтіленням. Це служіння носили ці брати ченці впродовж 30 літ аж доки покликав їх Господь до Себе, і їхні Мощі зложили в Ближніх Печерах Лаври.

Патерикон Києво-Печерської Лаври розповідає про таке чудо зв’язане зі Св. Спиридоном. Одного разу коли він розпалював огонь у печі дах загорівся в пекарні. Монах закрив отвір печі своїм плащем, зав’язав рукави своєї свити і побіг до колодязя наповнити її водою, при чому погукав до інших монахів прибігти допомогти пошасити пожар. Та кoли вони прибули то побачили чудо. Плащеві зовсім не пошкодив огонь, а з сорочки не витекла ані крапля води і нею погасили пожар.

Ще одне чудо відбулося в 20-му столітті підчас захоплення Києва збройними силами нацистів. Німецький командант зацікавився провідати славні Печери Лаври, яку були закрили комуністичні наїзники роками тому. Знайшовся колишній монах, щоб попровадити команданта. Коли вони зупинилися біля нетлінних Мощей Св. Спиридона, командант запитав з якого б то матеріялу виробили ці тіла, бо ж не хотів повірити, що вони дійсно зісталися нетлінними. Почув відповідь, що це – справжні тіла святих людей, які нетлінні на знак перемоги над смертю, яку здобув їх і наш Господь Ісус Христос. Командант всією силою ударив по руці Святого дулом свого пістолета. Шкіра, яка потемніла від віку трісла і витік струмочок крові. Командант з вояками вибігли з Печер дуже здивовані а в наступний день всюди появилося проголошення, що Печери відкриті для відвідин всіма, хто тільки бажає.

І так ці смиренні мужі Божі, Преподобні Спиридон і Никодим далі свідкують про силу воскреслого Христа, Який полонив світ проповіддю простих рибалок, перероджених митників та блудниць, як і наверненого до Нього бувшого релігійного фанатика, Св. Павла. А також свідкують вони про силу дружби в Господі.

Нехай ці прості й побожні Просфорники своїми Молитвами допоможуть і нам постійно поручати все наше єство Богові, щоб воно було перетворене на гідну жертву для Його Царства, якому немає кінця. Амінь.

“Making the Bread of offering with your hands, with constant singing of the Psalms upon your lips, thus raising a sacrifice of praise to the Lord, together with the righteous Nicodemus, o blessed Spiridon, pray together with Him to Christ our God that our souls may be saved” (Troparion in Tone 4)

On November 13 on the Gregorian calendar (which is October 31 on the Julian), we celebrate the memory of our Venerable Fathers, Saints Spiridon and Nicodemus, Prosphora-Bakers of the Near Kyivan Caves.

Saint Spiridon entered the Kyivan Caves Monastery (Lavra) during the time of Abbot Pimen (1132-1141). Although he was no longer a young man and had never learned to read or write this simple man of God set himself to learn the Psalter by memory. He sang it continually as he cut wood, kneaded dough, lit the fire for the the oven or fashioned the Prosphora, the Loaves of Offering at the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.

The baking of the Prosphora was the special duty the Abbot gave St. Spiridon because of the pureness of his heart and his sincere dedication to God. St. Spiridon was accompanied in this task by another monk, St. Nicodemus, another simple soul who became a true brother to him. The two monks would sing the psalms joyfully as they fulfilled this solemn task of preparing the Bread that, during the Liturgy, would be transformed by the Grace of the Holy Spirit into the Precious Body of the Lord, while at the same time remaining the fruit of the earth, thereby linking Heaven and earth at each celebration, as the Lord has forever done by His Incarnation. Their work continued for thirty years until the Lord called them home and their bodies were placed in the Near Caves of the Lavra.

The Patericon of the Kyivan Caves Monastery recounts a miracle associated with St. Spiridon. On one occasion as he lit the fire for the oven, the roof of the bakery caught fire. The monk covered the mouth of the oven with his mantle, and tying together the sleeves of his shirt he dashed to the well and filled it with water, calling out to the other monks to help put out the fire. As they arrived they beheld a wonder. The mantle was untouched by the flames, the shirt retained every drop of the water and with it the fire was extinguished.

Another miracle came about in the 20th century during the occupation of Kyiv by the Nazi forces. A German commander was curious to visit the famed Caves of the Lavra which had been closed by the Communist occupiers years before. A former monk was found to guide the commander. As they paused beside the incorrupt body of St. Spiridon the commander inquired as to what the material was of which these bodies were constructed, being unable to believe that they were truly incorrupt. The response was that they were truly bodies of holy people which had remained incorrupt as a sign of the victory over death gained by the Master, our Lord Jesus Christ. The commander struck the hand of the Saint with full force with the barrel of his gun. The skin, darkened by the years, cracked open and blood trickled out. The commander and his company fled the Cave in astonishment and the very next day issued a declaration that the Caves were to be open for all who wished to visit them.

Thus these humble men of God, Saints Spiridon and Nicodemus, continue to bear testimony to the power of the Risen Christ, who won the world by the preaching of the simple fishermen, the transformed tax-collectors and prostitutes, as well as the converted former religious fanatic, St. Paul. They also bear witness to the power of friendship in the Lord.

May these simple and devout bakers of the Bread of the offering, by their prayers, help us to continually offer our whole being to God so that it may be transformed into a worthy offering for His Kingdom which knows no end. Amen.
