Virgin-Martyr Lucy of Syracuse

На 26-го грудня за григоріянським календарем (це 13-го грудня за юліянським), ми святкуємо пам’ять Діви-Мучениці Лукії Сіракузької.

Св. Лукія (Лучія) постраждала в Сіркузах у Сіцілії у р. 304 в часі володіння Імператора Діоклетіяна, коли її оскаржив наречений, язичник, у тому, що вона - Християнка.

Це сталося в часі, коли Лукія роздавала маєток своєї матері, яку вона була переконала передати його вбогим ще за часу життя, замість того, щоб його віддати, як віно для шлюбу дочки, або як посмертний спадок. Її мати, Євтихія, була схильна виконати те, чого її дочка поросила, тому що вона, було, чудесно видужала від кровотечі при Святині Св. Аґати Катанської, після цілонічної молитви там разом з Лукією.

Коли її наречений почув, ніби Лукія знайшла собі іншого Жениха, а не знав, що це – наш Господь Ісус Христос, то він дуже розізлився і вдався до судді, Пасхасія, а той, почувши що вона не принесе жертву ідолові Імператора, дав вирок, щоб її віддати в дім розпусти.

Лукії відповідь, передана ось так у Алфріка Життії Святих:

Нікого ж тіло не можна так занечистити, щоб це загрожувало душі, якщо це не приносить утіху для розуму. Якщо б ти підняв мою руку до твого ідола, і таким чином заставив мене принести жертву проти моєї волі, я б усе одно була безвинна перед істиним Богом, Який судить по волі людській, та Якому відоме все. Та й зараз, якщо проти моєї волі ти вчиниш мені занечищення, то мені цим же зарахується подвійна чистота. Ти не в силі наклонити мою волю до твого наміру; і чого б ти тільки не чинив з моїм тілом,- до того ти мене не змусиш.

І хоч охоронці всією силою намагалися повести дівчину туди, де вона мала відбути своє покарання, Божа сила так міцно її тримала, що вони ніяк не змогли навіть зрушити її . У Дантовому творі Purgatorio пише, що наречений Лукії особливо влюбився в її прекрасні очі. То вона їх вирвала, щоб затримати свою честь. Нарешті один з язичників устромив шаблю в її горло і вона віддала свою душу Богові.

З огляду на її жертву Св. Лукію шанують, як покровительку тих, котрі терплять на недугу очей. А її ім'я походить від латинського слова “lux”, що означає «світло». До цього ж передання каже, що вона, бувало, провідувала Християн у катакомбах носячи вінець свічок на голові. Отож її Свято, якого особливо святкують на Заході, визначається запаленням свічок і кострів.

Св. Лукія також славна тим, що її ім'я повторюється в традиційній пісні неаполітанській “Santa Lucia”, яку прославив Енріко Карузо. (Часом українці співають «Мнтогая літа» на цю мельодію). Англіканський Священик, Ґордон Джон Джайлз надрукував версію цієї пісні на англійській мові, як гімн. А ось скромна спроба перевести на мову українську:

В небі на півночі
Зірки співають;
Різдво зближається,
Свічечки сяють.
Вітай, оспівана,
Сяюча, радісна,.
Свята Лучія, Свята Лучія.

Її Свято освічує темну пору року. Нехай же приносить Св Лукія Господнє Святло і нашим душам та думкам. Амінь.

“Whatever you give away at death for the Lord's sake you give because you cannot take it with you. Give now to the true Savior, while you are healthy, whatever you intended to give away at your death” (St. Lucy’s words quoted in Aelfric’s Lives of Saints)

On December 26 on the Gregorian calendar (which is December 13 on the Julian), we celebrate the memory of the Virgin-Martyr Lucy of Syracuse.

St. Lucy suffered in Syracuse in Sicily in the year 304 during the rule of Emperor Diocletian, having been denounced by her pagan suitor for being a Christian.

This came about as Lucy was distributing her mother’s estate which she had persuaded her to give to the poor while yet alive, instead of using it as a dowry or a posthumous inheritance. Her mother, Eutychia, was inclined to do as her daughter said, since she had received a miraculous healing of an issue of blood at the shrine of St. Agatha of Catania, after having prayed there all night with Lucy.

When her fiancé heard that Lucy had found another Bridegroom, quite unaware that this was our Lord, Jesus Christ, he was enraged and went to the magistrate, Paschasius, who, upon hearing that she would not sacrifice to the emperor’s image, decreed that she should be sentenced to life in a brothel.

Lucy`s response is related in Aelfric`s Lives of Saints thus:

No one's body is polluted so as to endanger the soul if it has not pleased the mind. If you were to lift my hand to your idol and so make me offer against my will, I would still be guiltless in the sight of the true God, who judges according to the will and knows all things. If now, against my will, you cause me to be polluted, a twofold purity will be gloriously imputed to me. You cannot bend my will to your purpose; whatever you do to my body, that cannot happen to me.

Although the guards tried with all their might to move the maid to the place she was to serve her sentence, she was held by the power of God and could not be budged. In Dante`s Purgatorio it is said that Lucy’s suitor was particularly taken with her lovely eyes. Lucy plucked them out to preserve her chastity. Finally one of the pagans plunged a sword into her throat and she commended her soul to God.

Because of her sacrifice, St. Lucy is considered to be the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the eyes. Her name is derived from the Latin word for “light” (“lux”), and there is a tradition that she used to visit Christians in the catacombs wearing a wreath of candles. Thus her festival, which is particularly observed in the West is marked by the lighting of candles and bonfires.

St. Lucy is also renowned for the recurrence of her.name in the traditional Neapolitan song “Santa Lucia” made famous by Enrico Caruso. (Some Ukrainians sing “Mnohaya lita” to this melody.) The Anglican priest, the Reverend Gordon John Giles, has printed a version of the song done as a hymn:

Deep in the northern sky
Bright stars are beaming;
Christmas is drawing nigh,
Candles are gleaming.
Welcome you vision rare,
Lights glowing in your hair.
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia.

As her Feastday brings brightness to a dark time of the year, may St. Lucy also bring the Lord’s light to our souls and our minds. Amen.
